Will Your Breast Implants Sag Over Time?

If you are considering breast implants to boost the size and volume of your breasts, you likely have a few questions. One common question among women focuses on breast sagging and whether breast implant sagging is really a thing. Will your breast implants reduce sagging as you age? Is breast sagging after pregnancy a concern? Will breastfeeding cause my breast implants to sag? Is there anything you can do to reduce the risk of breast sagging?
Breast Implants Do Not Defy Gravity
When it comes to breast implants and sagging, there are no miracles or secret sauce. While breast implants can increase your breast size and volume, they are not capable of defying gravity. As you age, it is normal for the breasts to sag as gravity works its unwanted magic. In addition, implants actually increase the weight placed on the connective tissue and can increase the amount of sagging over time.
Changes To Your Body Can Increase the Risk of Breast Sagging
There is a higher risk of breast sagging after pregnancy. During pregnancy, your natural breast tissue stretches as your breasts get fuller and heavier. After childbirth and nursing, when your body returns to a pre-pregnancy stage, that stretched tissue can contribute to sagging breasts. If you have implants and get pregnant, the implants themselves may not contribute much to the amount of sagging that occurs. However, the sagging may be more noticeable with the implants given the additional size and weight of the implants.
Breastfeeding Does Not Increase Your Risk
For many years, it was believed that breastfeeding increased the risk of breast sagging for women with breast implants. However, a study by Dr. Norma Cruz, a professor of plastic surgery at the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine, showed that breastfeeding was not a significant risk factor when it came to breast sagging. In fact, they showed that the increased risk of sagging came from the pregnancy and not feeding the baby afterwards.
A Supportive Bra Can Help
If you are hoping to reduce your risk of breast sagging after implants, the best thing you can do is find yourself some high-quality, supportive bras that offer your breasts the support they need. This can help ensure that the connective tissue in the breasts remain strong and help to defy the power of gravity, for at least a little while.
Consider a Breast Lift or Breast Implant Revision
The good news is you don’t have to live with sagging breasts. If you are unhappy with your breast sagging despite your implants, talk with your surgeon about the benefits of a breast augmentation revision or a breast lift to reduce the appearance of sagging and lift your breasts higher, giving you a more youthful appearance.
